Homeless in AMERICA
The 501 c 3 (?) Not-for-Profit Corporation “Homeless in America” was formed in order to provide homes for homeless veterans in the New York Metropolitan Area. It is our objective to provide, also, opportunities for work and for pay for these veteran residents and to eventually evolve into an organization that provides for, or provides space for, veteran support services. Employment opportunities would include the essential maintaining of their properties (indoor and outdoor). We also anticipate an environment that would provide food for the veterans and that some of these veterans would cook and prepare the food they consume. Food would also have to be properly stored and ordered giving experience that might lead to higher-level employment in the private sector, such as steward for hotels and country clubs. We would be providing a living and study environment for those veterans who intend to further their education or acquire specific job training as well as coordinating with public agencies and employment services that would help with securing actual employment. We would be creating jobs that would sustain veterans to help to improve their self-respect, self-image and sense of worth; to facilitate their employment in the private sector and to provide space for counseling and other social services required by veterans for their transition into self-sustaining and productive members of society. Counseling in dress and acquiring work / interview appropriate clothing is also an essential for success. Counseling services may include: psychological counseling, social counseling for adjustment to civilian life, drug counseling and facilitation to sobriety programs and job counseling. (Job counseling may include discussions of job site self-discipline, and again, providing a living and study environment for those veterans who intend to further their education or acquire specific job training).
The above is our founding premise. As we are able to help veterans we would hope to evolve into other areas of assistance to and for this needy population.
Acquisition of Space:
To accomplish these objectives “Homeless in America” would require the purchase or lease of established space that could be reconfigured to the needs of our population. The need for individual space can vary among the homeless veteran population. Most would require space for single occupant men and, in some cases, women. Some veterans are members of a family unit that may be struggling to succeed and would require larger space to satisfy their needs. We have seen recently that apartment complexes and unused schools have come onto the market, these places would need some reconfiguring but would be excellent places for a starting point. Sometimes warehouses become available and these open spaced facilities can be redesigned as well. Much of this space may require purchase as the willingness of the owners, be they public / private school districts or corporation with apartments to sell is in doubt. Warehouses may prove easier to lease and reconfigure.
“Homeless in America” has researched this area and has a cadre of fine, well-experienced and reliable contractors that can perform the services necessary to repurpose any facilities we might find opportune for our veterans needs.
Transportation:
This is an area of variable need for veterans depending on geography. The five boroughs of New York City are well serviced and might require significantly less attention than the suburbs of New York.
Self-Funding:
We are asking for grant money out of need but also for the legitimacy that success in this process can bestow on Not-for-Profit organizations. Start-up may require substantial capital. The directors of Homeless in America feel that we are well qualified to begin this process.
